Interconnection: A Symphony of Light and Architecture

Antonin Krizanic's Award-Winning Projection Mapping Masterpiece

Interconnection, a projection mapping artwork by Antonin Krizanic, transforms the Romanian Parliament building into a vibrant canvas of light and motion. This article explores the inspiration, unique properties, and technical aspects of this remarkable design.

Antonin Krizanic's Interconnection draws inspiration from contemporary visionary art, architecture, sacred geometry, and even physics and chemistry. The design aims to turn the Palace of Parliament into an endlessly beautiful scenery of symbolic dialogue, integrating the facade's architectural characteristics into the artwork. This approach adds an extra value to the conversation between artist and audience, the city and its citizens.

What sets Interconnection apart is its unique storytelling through 3D animation content, combined with 15 years of experience in the technology of building projection. The artwork was projected onto the Romanian Parliament, the second largest administrative building in the world after the Pentagon, captivating 40,000 viewers. The design avoids mapping cliches, instead offering a vivid piece of art that incorporates the building as an integral part of the spectacle.

The realization of Interconnection involved integrating the architectural characteristics of the building into the 3D animation content. This was achieved by using a 3D model of the building and projecting it back onto the facade. The building is not just a backdrop for the animation, but a crucial element of the artwork, along with the story and the music.

Interconnection is a technical marvel. The project, which took 2.5 months to create, uses 104 video projectors, clocking over 1 million ANSI lumens. It covers the 23,000 m2 surface of the Romanian Parliament, incorporating the building itself as part of the spectacle. The design animates parts of the building in a dizzying vortex of motion, playing with the viewer’s senses.

The design team faced several challenges, including the fact that the upper part of the building is 50 meters behind the lower part. This could easily distort the projected motives. Moreover, the audience was not only watching it from the front angle but also from the sides. The team had to create the artwork in a way that its visible for everyone and no distortions appear for the viewers. This required all their expertise and meticulous planning, as they had no possibility to do any tests on site.

Interconnection was awarded Silver in A' Lighting Products and Fixtures Design Award in 2018. This prestigious award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation. These designs, admired for their strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill, showcase a remarkable level of excellence and introduce positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
